Diego Maradona, coach Argentina, in an interview expressed his worries about the attacking talent of the Mexicans and said that it is impossible to know what team they will play. He said, “We’re going to give Mexico the respect they deserve because, in spite of losing against Uruguay, they know exactly what they’re doing. We will try to get them and look for their weaknesses.”

Both teams will see this match as a must win when Algeria square up against England in a Group C encounter in Cape Town on Friday.

Algeria have never made it past the group stage in their two previous World Cup appearances in 1982 and 1986, although they did cause quite a stir when they upset the West Germans in 1982.
That particular result led to controversy as the West Germans and Austrians later contrived a 1-0 West German victory that served to pass both of those European countries through to the knockout phase at the expense of the Algerians.
But that’s their history and this is 2010.
Algeria lost 1-0 to Slovenia in their first match in this World Cup and sit last in Group C. Now they need a win over England to guarantee a chance of survival.
After seeing how the Three Lions squad failed to dispatch the USA, Algerian defender Nadir Belhadj for one thinks his team can do it.

 

Algerians see problems in England’s defense

"We have seen some gaps, especially in their defense,” said Belhadj, “and, if we can take advantage of those gaps…maybe it could make the difference and we could create history by qualifying from the group stages.”
The English are not immune to being upset by a lesser football power. Their 1-0 loss to USA in Brazil in the 1950 World Cup is the most commonly cited example. Last weekend’s 1-1 draw with the USA only serves to show that the modern England squad is vulnerable too.
Robert Green’s unfortunate blunder gifted the USA a goal and a share of the points, but despite largely dominating play against the Americans the English seldom looked truly dominant.
With the loss of Rio Ferdinand and with Ledley King doubtful, Belhadj’s observation isn’t far off the mark. The English do indeed seem vulnerable at the back.
Ferdinand’s knee injury, suffered in a training ground encounter, ruled him out of the tournament before it started, and motivated England boss Fabio Capello to call up Michael Dawson of Tottenham to replace the Manchester United man.
Talented but fragile defender Ledley King suffered a groin strain in the match against the USA and is said to be doubtful for the Algeria match. If King is unable to start Capello will have to make a decision on whom to play at the back. Dawson joins two other players in the frame for central defense: Liverpool’s Jamie Carragher and West Ham’s Matthew Upson.
The English at least can be comforted knowing that Gareth Barry is once again fit and is set to start against Algeria, having recovered from an ankle injury suffered while playing for his club, Manchester City, last month.
But the starting goalkeeper is another area of decision for Capello. Will he go with Green again, despite his calamitous error against the USA?  

Is the Jabulani a factor?

For his part, Green admitted the mistake was all his and nothing to do with the apparently unpredictable qualities of the much maligned Jabulani ball.
"You prepare mentally for making those mistakes - that's what you do the preparation for before a game. You don't let it affect you. I'm not blaming the ball, I should have stopped it and there's no two ways about it” said the West Ham ‘keeper.
Capello put things in perspective. “He made one mistake, a big mistake, but in the second half he also made one great save,” the manager said. “He saved that really, really well.” We’ll probably not know until Friday whether Green will get another chance.
Yet the Algerians come into the match with England having suffered a similar fate. The goal that gave their Slovenian opponents the vital three points last weekend also came as a result of a goalkeeping error.
Algerian keeper Chaouchi should have dealt with Koran’s shot easily. Instead he allowed the shot to bounce off his arm and into the goal. The Jabulani factor?

Both teams need a win

A loss to England means an early trip home for the Algerians. A win, albeit unlikely, is probably the only chance they have of survival, and Belhadj and company will undoubtedly approach the match with the attitude that nothing is impossible.
England’s defensive worries are certainly troublesome, but they’d be offset some if striker Wayne Rooney were to get himself on the score sheet. Rooney hasn’t scored for his country in six matches, and although others among the English are capable of bulging the onion bag, the sight of Rooney doing for England what he did so well for Manchester United this season would undoubtedly warm the cockles of English hearts as they prepare to face the big boys in the knockout stages. But first they have to avoid being upset by Algeria.

What's at stake

Argentina defeated Nigeria 1-0 in its opening game, while South Korea posted a 2-0 victory over Greece. As a result, the Argentines and South Koreans are tied for first place in Group B with three points apiece, while winless Nigeria and Greece pick up the rear.
This is a critical game for both sides as a win would land that team in first place in Group B and put them in the driver's seat with six points and one game to go in the first round.
A tie wouldn't be disastrous for Argentina, as its last match of the group stage is against lowly Greece, who has yet to win a game in two World Cups after making their tournament debut in 1994.
South Korea, on the other hand, faces a tricky Nigeria side in its final encounter of the group stage, so anything less than a victory against Argentina would mean their chances of advancing to the second round would go down to the wire.

Player to watch for Argentina

Gabriel Heinze — The tough-tackling defender netted the winner for Argentina against Nigeria, scoring with a powerful header off a free kick. Heinze is coach Diego Maradona's defensive marshal, but it will be interesting to see if he ventures forward in attack after finding the net against the Nigerians.

Player to watch for South Korea

Lee Jung-Soo — Like Heinze, Lee Jung-Soo is a centre-back who scored for South Korea off a set piece against Greece. The South Korean possesses good speed, which he uses to great effect in joining the attack, and to recover to get back into position when the other team has the ball.

Key match-up

Lionel Messi vs. Park Ji-Sung — They play for two of the biggest clubs in the world (Messi for FC Barcelona, Park Ji-Sung with Manchester United), and both are talented playmakers and serve as the creative fulcrums of their national teams. Messi is the best player in the world, but Park Ji-Sung is a talented star who doesn't quite receive the recognition he deserves. A strong performance against Argentina would go a long way to change that.

A's second match will face the host against the Celestes. With two
draws nothing is yet decided in this group, and the winner will claim
the top at least for a week.

Uruguay and
South Africa will hold the second match of their group knowing that
every single point will matter to advance to the next stage. Diego
Forlan's squad had a very disappointing beginning in the competition, as
their supposedly unstoppable offense had many problems making its way
against France's packed back line. South Africa confirmed their strategy
4-2-3-1 can offer deadly counterattacks and for that reason most of the
second half they dominated the game against Mexico. Their lack of
experience against strikers of International football proved lethal
against the Mexicans: something will have to change as Luis Suarez and
Diego Forlan can prove deadly if given any space. Half a ticket for the
Knockouts will be given to the winner, will the host stop Charrua's
advance?

 

Oscar Tabarez's experimental lab

Something went wrong in Uruguay's Gallic
debut, as the bridge between Celeste's strikers and the creative line
was built over impassable terrain. For this matter the Maestro will
introduce many variations, as well as adding a third striker to better
assist team's marksman. Nicolas Lodeiro's unacceptable behavior against
France will keep him away from this match and probably for the rest of
the competition, for now the substitutes will be given a chance to show
what they can do to aid Uruguay's creation.

Palermo's
Edinson Cavani will take Ignacio Gonzales' place in an offensive manner.
The lack of a fourth midfielder will call for Diego Forlan to take
command over team's offensive direction, as his teams needs his wits to
start their advance, and the offensive trident will feed endlessly from
this modification. Porto's Jorge Fucile will be the second change in the
squad, occupying the left band, sidelining Mauricio Victorino to the
bench. Forlan recognized their mistakes against France "We need to
improve our collective game from what we did against France and have
more weight on our opponent's area". Unluckily, and opposing to Socrates
beliefs, lack of ignorance does not imply goodness. Their rivals are up
to date with this modifications and will probably try to overwhelm the
Celestes from the bands, to produce the same effect the Vuvuzuela have
over the crowds: to confuse and try to lower the level of awareness of
the opponents.

Both Pereyra's showed their solidity from
the bands, but the Africans have a wide physical advantage on both
speed and stamina over the American squad. Diego Lugano will have to be
omnipresent to stop Bafana Bafana's endless advance, but this is not
something he is not used to: team's captain recognizes he must be a
defensive warlord, and this does not appear to be a burden too heavy for
him to have over his shoulder. The four man back-line will be mandatory
against a team that relies heavily in the counter attack, though it
might leave many spaces in the midfield, especially with Nicolas
Lodeiro's absence.

As the Maestro declared, a victory will
be a "Giant leap forward" for the Celeste. But will they be able to
outrun The Boys at their own home?

An ambush in Africa

The local team is locked with all their
rivals of Group A with a single point, and now the end of the Group
Stage is almost here the pressure for victory is growing higher and
higher. Team's aggressive formation with a lot of pressure from the
bands can get through almost any defense. Katlego Mphela and Siphiwe
Tshabalala showed both of them can surprise from distance as well as
advance until facing opponent's goalkeeper face to face, though their
last second calls have not been particularly sharp, at least during the
first encounter. 

Brazilian's coach Carlos Alberto
Parrreira will have much to think figuring out how to face the Celeste
squad. Against Mexico his defensive strategy worked wonders, though he
might lack the solidity of certain players to actually turn Bafana's
area into a fortress. Steven Pienaar will be decisive to create
offensive opportunities, as his creative role will be fundamental to
exploit the advantages of team's electric forwards. PIenaar declared he
was not at the 100%, but it was made clear during the last match that
Parreira cannot do without Everton's offensive commander. He asked his
team mates to play with the heart "No one can stop you if you play with
your heart" were his exact words.

Player's confidence is sky high, and they
know a victory this Wednesday will almost seal their pass to the next
stage. Lucas Thwala's weak performance against Mexico was one of the
reasons why the host was not able to retain the victory on the debut
match. For that matter, and to provide assistance to the back line
against Celeste's beasts, Tsepo Masilela will most likely perform within
the starting eleven. Stopping Diego Forlan will be determinant to
dominate the ball, but the task will be overly difficult. Another draw
might turn the last match of the stage into a nightmare for both teams,
so they can only go for victory. Having faced each other only once, this
six-pointer will decide the future of both squads.

Spain striker Fernando Torres is likely to start off the bench as he is almost fit after a knee injury. Andres Iniesta is winning his fitness contest and might play instead of Fabregas.
